One hundred trillion metric tons of carbon sits below us. That’s energy that Exxon-Mobil claims “the people owe us. There’s no way such a resource should stay in public hands. Exxon believes that it should own all of those western lands.” Then, once we’re out of oil, their company continues to take from Mother Nature’s Earth and pile up more revenues! Why should the people own that lake of carbon in our parks? Why can’t big corporations destroy our great landmarks? What’s more important, after all, the beauty of our plains? Or, massive corporate profits and healthy Wall Street gains? -RKO- #620 04-30-17 [Political Poetry by RKO now available at www.xlibris.com]

Only the Dead Have Seen the End of War
The trumpets sound; the war begins. Still, in the end, nobody wins. The twisted, mangled bodies lie in rubble piled up so high. The military plants a flag as leaders howl a hollow brag about how they are undefeated, and wars like this won’t be repeated. And, so, another year goes by until an echoed battle cry begins the process one more time. Because, you see, war’s not a crime. Those global agencies declare the “rules” of war, and what’s ‘unfair’: you can’t use poison gas, they say. But, mothers of all bombs? Okay! You can’t behead your enemy, but, waterboarding? Sure, feel free! You can’t kill children; that’s just feckless. But, blowing up their home’s not reckless! It’s mankind’s sheer stupidity to think – in war, there’s victory! -RKO- #619 04-29-17 [Political Poetry by RKO now available at www.xlibris.com]
It’s Not His Father’s Real Estate!
As Trump approached his hundredth day, we were surprised to hear him say he thought it would be easier! Most Presidents begin to age; their hair turns gray as they assuage how politics gets sleazier! Perhaps too many men believe (or, maybe they’re just too naive) that they’ll do greater things. But, once in office, they succumb to all the evil that’s become a government of kings. Members of Congress only see themselves as privileged royalty. With all their power, wealth and stance (how dare we call them our ‘servants’?!?). The cesspool’s filled with crocodiles, and we watch Trump as he beguilles a Congress filled with ooze and pomp. It’s difficult to drain that swamp! The quicksand is Pelosi’s fodder; McConnell thrives on treading water! Congress is one great glob of sleaze (and Trump thought it would be a breeze!). -RKO- #618 04-28-17 [Political Poetry by RKO now available at www.xlibris.com]
You’re President – Not Despot!
The Court didn’t do what he wanted it to, so President Trump says he now wants to dump the Ninth Circuit Court, because it falls short. Trump thinks that the judges are personal porters, installed to support his Executive Orders! That’s not how it works, Mr. Trump! Don’t you see? America’s still a democracy! The government’s not for your personal dalliances. It’s all been designed to ensure checks and balances. If you still plan on making America greater, then follow the law. You’re not a dictator! -RKO- #617 04-27-17 [Political Poetry by RKO now available at www.xlibris.com]
Death & Taxes
The tax plan is revealed! The corporate tax is cut. Trump says it will create more jobs. He “knows” that from his gut. If corporations seem to have all the employees required, then how’s a tax cut going to get more workers to be hired? Won’t business take the savings and keep its ‘loopholes’, too? And won’t that mean more taxes for folks like me and you? With lower taxes looming, the corporate CPAs will start the fiscal grooming, and find a thousand ways to get around the tax code. So, maybe what we’ll see: a lot more corporations declare themselves “tax-free”! Those billion-dollar companies will twist and turn the facts. They won’t be adding many jobs, and won’t pay any tax! -RKO- #616 04-26-17 [Political Poetry by RKO now available at www.xlibris.com]
The Horror
We lock them up and throw away the key. If they rebel, they’re sent to solitary. And, there they sit, as they go slowly mad; and all because a warden said they’re bad. It’s time our prison system saw refinement. It’s time to outlaw solitaire confinement, and other kinds of torture and abuse that we inflict on those who “have no use”. Before a person earns a law degree, they should be forced to spend a month in solitary. Our politicians, judges, lawyers, cops are pretty good at pulling out all stops when bringing inmates, crushing, to their knees; and – since they never see their inhumanity, they rarely know the toll it takes to be imprisoned in one’s mind, in solitary. It’s easy just to say, “It’s time they should have served. And, as for their confinement, they got what they deserved. For them I have no sympathy. So let them rot in solitary.” To drive a person to insanity is nothing short of inhumanity. We have no right to criticize a terrorist or ISIS, as long as we do nothing to change our prison crisis. -RKO- #615 04-25-17 [Political Poetry by RKO now available at www.xlibris.com]
At Least There’s A Bar Car!
I used to fly for business. On almost every flight, the passengers were friendly; the stewardess polite. The culture now is changing. The ‘pat downs’ are invasive. And all those airline TV ads aren’t really that persuasive! The “friendly skies” no longer are courteous and cheerful. And if the crews don’t beat you up, you’re bound to get an earful! I know the ‘rules’ are needed; I know some don’t comply. But all the violence in the air makes me not want to fly! The terrorists don’t concern me, or bombs in some guy’s shoe. I tend to worry more about the pilot and his crew! So, if I have to travel, before I board that plane: I think I’ll reconsider and plan to take the train! -RKO- #614 04-24-17 [Political Poetry by RKO now available at www.xlibris.com]
Death Takes No Holiday
The politicians promised to end shootings in schools; and they proposed to do it by breaking all the rules. They tossed the law that banned all guns from campuses and playgrounds. They dictated that teachers now be armed with fresh, live ammo rounds. So, teachers all were trained to shoot, and all became proficient; they all could hit a bullseye, such marksmanship sufficient. Then Johnny came to school one day, a gun pulled from his backpack. The teachers drew their weapons, and started shooting back! As students ducked the crossfire, a panicked hell ensued. The teachers gunned down Johnny, and Jack and Jill and Jude. The politicians saw no flaw. Their legislative ‘caper’ “trained” teachers how to shoot at all those bullseyes marked on paper. But, shooting at a person, those teachers weren’t prepared for; and – in the chaos – all they did was kill more kids they cared for. -RKO- #613 04-23-17 [Political Poetry by RKO now available at www.xlibris.com]
Our Priorities are Bass-Ackwards!
Meadows, mountains, rivers, trees; lakes and streams, pristine prairies. Flowers, oceans, SUVs; mangrove forests, aqua seas. Animals and coral reef; watch a gently-falling leaf. Fish and creatures of the water; birds, a kangaroo, an otter. Funny, of those twenty things only one routinely brings worries about “wear and tear”, daily service and repair. All of nature’s purity doesn’t take priority over man-made’s metal crap that – in seven years – is scrap! We will polish, wax and clean our ‘all-wheel drive’ machine. But there’s not been much time spent cleaning our environment. -RKO- #612 04-22-17 [Political Poetry by RKO now available at www.xlibris.com]
We’re Down to Splitting Hairs
Putin sends troops to the border; Trump entertains Kid Rock. Paris recovers from terror; the world’s in a state of shock. Nobody knows what will happen; most of us don’t even care. We’re far too busy watching “The Voice” or trying to style our hair. The world has seen other crises; but none quite as scary as this. Two crazy guys with weird haircuts could soon make our world an abyss! -RKO- #611 04-21-17 [Political Poetry by RKO now available at www.xlibris.com]
